Reading Time: 4 min ( Word Count: 1176 )
Currently, around 7 in 10 Americans use social media, and this number is only increasing. With so many people utilizing these social networks, business owners have realized that social media is an incredibly helpful tool in growing a business. However, understanding the importance of keeping up with your social media channels is one thing. Figuring out how to keep social media updated when you’re overwhelmed is quite another. As if you don’t already have enough on your plate, sometimes keeping up with your social media channels can feel like running another whole business!
How do I stop feeling overwhelmed by social media?
If you feel like you’re just barely keeping your head above water when it comes to social media, take a breath! While social media is important for your business and can be time-consuming, there are a lot of ways to make it much less overwhelming.
Here are 5 ideas for how to keep social media updated when you’re overwhelmed, so you can grow your business with less headache!
- Choose your platform(s) wisely
- Create a calendar
- Vary your content
- Set aside time to engage
- Hire it out
Let’s take a step back and make a plan. Business owners have a lot on their plates—trust us, we know! But with a few strategic methods, you can grow your social media channels and still sleep at night. With some thinking and planning, this graph of increasing social media users will actually make you excited for the growth you can see for your business!
1. Choose your platform(s) wisely
If you’re trying to keep up with Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and LinkedIn, take a step back! You don’t have to do it all. Unless you have time for a whole handful of platforms, take a moment and narrow it down to really focus on one or two to start. It’s better to fully invest in one or two and do them well than to be behind on every platform. You want to produce valuable content and grow your community, and often this means narrowing it down.
Consider the nature of your business when choosing social media channels. Think of your demographics. Is your target audience old or young? Male or female? What are their interests? What type of business do you have? For B2Cs, Facebook and Instagram usually work well. If you’re a B2B, consider trying LinkedIn. YouTube works well for most businesses, whether B2C or B2B. Lastly, take a look at your competitors. What channels are they using? Which are successful?
After you narrow it down, put your focus on these one or two platforms. Focus on creating excellent content for one or two platforms rather than mediocre or nonexistent content for all of them. As you’re able, you can consider whether it’s worth expanding to another platform.
2. Create a calendar so you know what’s coming and what you have to do
Have you ever sat staring at your Facebook page wondering what you should post? How are you going to keep content coming tomorrow and next week and next month if you don’t even know what to say to your audience today?
A social media calendar will do wonders in helping you organize your thoughts and plans for your channels. By planning in advance, you can figure out exactly how often you need to post, what content you need to create, and when you’re going to do it. By planning beforehand, you can spend your work time actually getting things done rather than wondering what you should do.
Depending on your business and channels, consider creating a list of tasks each week so that you can always know what’s coming. For example:
Monday – research
Tuesday – create next week’s content
Wednesday – create visuals
Thursday – schedule posts
There are lots of great options out there for social media planning. Monday.com, AirTable, and Asana are just a few.
3. Vary your content
You can create valuable content without spending hours and hours. If you’re a perfectionist, it can be tempting to spend tons of time making everything look just perfect. Posting often is advantageous for most every channel, but you don’t have to aim for 1000-word blog posts every day. Simplify your content! Some days you may post a video that took hours to make. Other days you might post a thoughtful quote or even share helpful information from another business or acquaintance in your industry.
You can also save time and reach more customers by repurposing your content.
4. Set aside time to engage
Social media algorithms love engaged accounts. Interacting with your followers will help your posts be seen by more people, build your relationships, and grow your following.
This is something that you probably won’t want to assign to a specific day of the week. In general, it’s best to respond to interactions more quickly.
Consider the nature of each task you need to accomplish. If you’re creating a highly-researched post or video, you’ll probably want to schedule time to do this in the morning, maybe right after you’ve eaten and had your coffee. This type of task needs to be done when you can really think.
On the other hand, engaging with your customers, while important, doesn’t take a ton of deep focus. Responding to comments and messages is something you can do when your workday is winding down, or maybe even when you’re on your couch relaxing in the evening.
For your own sanity, try to set aside specific times to engage. Checking your channels every 30 minutes to see if there are any new comments is quickly going to drive you crazy. Whether it’s at 4pm every day or changes throughout the week, try to schedule out this time in advance.
5. Hire it out
Maybe your business is thriving and while you know the value of social media, you’re simply too busy filling orders, meeting with customers, or managing your employees to put the time into it. Sometimes hiring out the job of social media management is in the best interest of your business.
